Bass
Upright Bass & Electric Bass
Upright Bass
A student should choose the upright (also known as double bass) for its unique role as a harmonic foundation in many genres, the physical and musical skills it develops, and its versatile nature for both classical and jazz music. It is physically demanding but rewarding, builds strong rhythm and coordination, and offers opportunities for solo performance.
The double bass is the only modern string instrument tuned in fourths, similar to a bass guitar, which can be appealing to students who already play or are interested in that instrument. It also provides a powerful way for students to express themselves and experiment with different sounds and techniques.
Electric Bass
A student should choose an electric bass if they want to play popular genres like rock, metal, funk, and most modern pop, or if they prioritize portability, lower physical strain, and easier access to effects pedals and amplification. The electric bass is generally easier for beginners to learn, offers a more consistent sound, and is more versatile for different amplifications.
It is significantly more portable and less physically demanding to move than a double bass, which can be very heavy and cumbersome. The shorter scale length and solid body are less taxing on the hands and can make it easier to play faster passages and techniques.
